While many of you are familiar with gay marriage becoming legal in certain states like New York, many of you do not understand that it DOES NOT allow foreign born partners citizenship as it would for heterosexual couples. So if someone like Toni and I want to get married, he still cannot be granted citizenship as the United States government does not recognize same-sex marriage. Meaning, he would get deported eventually. This discrimination is out-dated, unfair, and needs to change.
Over the last few years and organization called Immigration Equality has been pushing to get this changed. Finally, a bill called the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2011 (CIRA) has been introduced and now it is time to build support! Within the CIRA includes an act called the Uniting American Families Act, which would eliminate this discriminatory practice and allow LGBT families the opporutnity to remain together in the country we call home. In short, the new legislation proposed by Senator Menendez will end the unconscionable choice between family and country that too many families are forced to make.
That’s why this bill is so important.
This link simply takes you to a page where you enter your zipcode (to find your senators). It then has a pre-written letter that will be emailed automatically to your Senator, with the push of a button. You are required to put in your Name, Address, email, and phone. This will not place you on any lists or be used to spam you by any means. It is required to show proof that you are in fact, a constituent of the senator you are reaching.
I also encourage you to choose the ‘Printed Letter’ option after emailing it (hit back in your browser and you don’t have to re-type anything) as well. The letter is pre-formatted and you just have to print it, adress an envelope and mail it.
Lastly, I want to thank you deeply for your help and support. Without people like you to stand up for the rights of others, nothing would get changed. Needless to say, I also implore you to send this to your friends, family, and post it on twitter, facebook, anywhere. For this to have a chance, we need to overwhelm the inbox and mailbox of the senators around the United States, and show them without a shadow of a doubt, that this bill is something the American people WANT.
From the bottom of our hearts,
